How to read this
Kp is a global 0–9 activity index, but what matters is the gap between tonight's Kp and what your latitude needs. That need is three numbers, not one: a camera on a long exposure picks the aurora up first, naked eyes need more, overhead needs the most. The list above uses each city's own thresholds, computed from its geomagnetic latitude.
Can I see the northern lights tonight?
If your city is listed above and your sky is dark and clear, it's worth going out — start with a long-exposure test shot, which picks the aurora up before your eyes do. If it isn't listed, tonight's forecast sits below your area's threshold, though substorms can still surprise.
What Kp is it right now?
The live number at the top of this page comes straight from NOAA and refreshes every 15 minutes. Kp itself moves in three-hour steps; the 24-hour maximum is the highest bin in NOAA's current forecast.
