What it takes to see the aurora from Vancouver
Vancouver sits at 49.3°N geographic, but what decides an aurora is geomagnetic latitude — 54.6°N here. That means the northern lights appear during moderate activity: from about Kp 4 they climb above the northern horizon, and a strong storm can put them overhead.

Watching from Vancouver: get clear of streetlights with an open northern horizon, give your eyes fifteen minutes to adapt, and concentrate on the hours around local midnight, when activity statistically peaks. The season runs from late August to mid-April, and activity climbs measurably around the equinoxes.
For comparison, Vancouver needs about Kp 4; Seattle, 198 km away, needs about Kp 5. On a marginal night that difference decides who sees anything.

Where Vancouver actually goes when the alert goes out
When a storm alert lands, Vancouver splits three ways: down to the water at Spanish Banks or Iona, up Burnaby Mountain, or north on the Sea to Sky to Porteau Cove. The trick is the downtown light dome sits south and east of the beaches, so a north view over water beats raw darkness. The visitor mistake is driving somewhere dark that faces the wrong way, or arriving at 10 p.m. to find the parking gates already shut. Be honest with yourself about the odds: this far south you need a real storm, a Kp around 6 or 7, and 2024 delivered exactly two of those nights. Clouds usually get a vote too, so if the forecast says clearing at 9:30, go at 9:30.

Spanish Banks

The default close-in spot: you're on the sand looking north across English Bay at the North Shore mountains, with the downtown light dome off to your right instead of in your face. On the big storm nights in May and October 2024 the whole beach filled up with tripods. Heads up that the parking lots gate around 10 p.m., which is exactly when things get good, so park on NW Marine outside the gates or take the bus and walk down.
Burnaby Mountain (SFU)

Locals shoot from the north side of the mountain by Centennial Way and the totem poles, looking over Burrard Inlet toward Indian Arm; the Oct 10, 2024 show was photographed from right here at 11 p.m. High enough to get above some of the haze, close enough that the 145 bus from Production Way SkyTrain still gets you home. The park road lot can close around 10 p.m., so be ready to walk in from Centennial Way.
Porteau Cove Provincial Park

The serious option: 40 minutes up the Sea to Sky, and you're looking straight north up Howe Sound with dark water in front of you and no city glow behind the mountains. This is where Metro Vancouver's aurora timelapses get shot. Know the rules before you go: the day-use area closes at 11 p.m., BC Parks does not allow driving into the campground just to watch the sky, and you cross active train tracks to reach the water.
