What it takes to see the aurora from Ushuaia

Six kilometres east on Ruta Nacional 3, a long shingle beach facing south down the Beagle Channel with Isla Navarino on the far side. Dark in that direction, and the town's glow stays behind you to the west.
Puerto Almanza

Fifty kilometres east along the coast road, a fishing settlement on the Beagle Channel with almost no street lighting. The channel and the Chilean shore fill the southern horizon, and there is no settlement of any size beyond it.
