4 towns across Ontario, each with tonight's chance from NOAA's Ovation model, updated every 15 minutes. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how far the lights reach from the pole, and these towns need Kp 3 to Kp 5 before your eyes pick anything up.

Faint aurora looks gray to your eyes and green to a phone. In Ontario a phone picks it up from about Kp 1, and your eyes need Kp 3.
Aurora is possible in Ontario from late August to mid-April. The sky has to be dark and clear. Clouds stop everything, and no camera gets around that.

Toronto
Bluffer's Park (Scarborough Bluffs)
13 km north-east · car
This is where CBC's photographers caught the green sky over the marina in October 2024 — down at the bottom of Brimley Road the bluffs and the open lake cut out most of the direct glare. It only pays off on the big overhead storms; on a marginal night the city dome still washes out the low northern horizon. Drive down (the 175 bus from Kennedy is seasonal and quits early) and expect the lot to fill fast once an alert goes wide.
Torrance Barrens Dark-Sky Preserve
143 km north · car
Canada's first dark-sky preserve, about two hours up the 400 and 11 past Gravenhurst, and the default answer any Toronto stargazer will give you. It's open Crown land: park off Southwood Road, walk out onto the bare Shield rock, and you get a full, genuinely dark horizon — the main viewing area is behind the sign, with one outhouse and no power. On big storm nights the roadside fills with cars from the city, so arrive before dark and pack bug spray in early summer.
Lennox & Addington Dark Sky Viewing Area
208 km north-east · car
A concrete viewing pad with parking right beside it at 7980 County Road 41 north of Napanee — Ontario's most southerly true dark-sky site, free and open year round from dusk to dawn. Toronto and Kingston astrophotographers treat it as the reliable aurora spot because the northern horizon here is properly black. It's roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive with nothing open nearby after dark, so fuel up first and keep your headlights off the pad when you pull in.
Questions about the northern lights in Ontario
Where in Ontario is the best place tonight?
Nothing in Ontario has a measurable chance right now. Thunder Bay needs the least activity, Kp 3, so it is the first place to light up when a storm arrives.
What Kp do you need to see the northern lights in Ontario?
Between Kp 3 and Kp 5, depending on how far north the town is. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how far the lights reach from the pole. Thunder Bay needs the least at Kp 3.
When is the best time of year in Ontario?
Aurora is possible from late August to mid-April, because the nights are long enough to be properly dark. A clear sky matters more than the forecast number.
Can an iPhone photograph the northern lights in Ontario?
Yes, from about Kp 1. A phone picks up aurora that is too faint for your eyes. Rest it on something steady and give it a long exposure. What looks gray to you comes out green on the phone.
Be ready before the next storm hits.
When you're finally standing in the cold under the night you've waited years for, there are no retakes — the sky does its show once and moves on. So pack the jacket, pack the thermos, and pack the one thing that makes the night eternal: the iOS astrophotography app built for auroras. Long after the trip, you'll still have the display itself, moving, in 4K.
