Faint aurora looks gray to your eyes and green to a phone. In Manitoba a phone picks it up from about Kp 1, and your eyes need Kp 1.

Aurora is possible in Manitoba from late August to mid-April. The sky has to be dark and clear. Clouds stop everything, and no camera gets around that.

Where people actually stand in Manitoba

Places locals and guides name, with what each one gives you. Every town below has its own page.

Churchill

Churchill Northern Studies Centre

24 km east · car

A research station at 1 Launch Road, 24 km east of town, with a heated dome and an outdoor deck whose lights are switched off when the aurora appears. Access is by arrangement, which also settles the bear question.

Cape Merry

1 km north-west · car

The point where the Churchill River meets Hudson Bay, a kilometre northwest of town, with the frozen bay taking up the whole northern horizon. Polar bears use this ground, so drive or go with a guide rather than walking out.

Winnipeg

Birds Hill Provincial Park

23 km north-east · car

Twenty-odd minutes up Hwy 59 and the city glow drops behind you — this is the default answer when the forecast lights up. Aim for the lake or the open horse-trail fields where the prairie sky runs flat to the north. You need a Manitoba parks vehicle permit, and on big storm nights you will not be alone.

Oak Hammock Marsh

32 km north · car

Half an hour north — Hwy 8 to Hwy 67, then PR 220 to the interpretive centre at 1 Snow Goose Bay — with nothing but marsh between you and the northern horizon. The Wetland Discovery Centre runs monthly astronomy nights from its rooftop, including an aurora-themed one. In the warm months the mosquitoes here are not a joke: long sleeves and spray, or stay in the car until the sky does something.

River Road through St. Andrews (Lockport)

25 km north-east · car

Follow Main Street onto Hwy 9, or take the old River Road along the west bank of the Red past the stone church at St. Andrews — the pullouts face the water and the sky opens up north of Lockport. It is the closest stretch where the dark actually wins, and you can be back in the city in half an hour. Watch for other cars doing the same slow crawl on storm nights.

Questions about the northern lights in Manitoba

Where in Manitoba is the best place tonight?

Churchill has the strongest chance right now at 10%. The list above reorders itself every 15 minutes, so the answer changes through the night.

What Kp do you need to see the northern lights in Manitoba?

Between Kp 1 and Kp 2, depending on how far north the town is. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how far the lights reach from the pole. Churchill needs the least at Kp 1.

When is the best time of year in Manitoba?

Aurora is possible from late August to mid-April, because the nights are long enough to be properly dark. A clear sky matters more than the forecast number.

Can an iPhone photograph the northern lights in Manitoba?

Yes, from about Kp 1. A phone picks up aurora that is too faint for your eyes. Rest it on something steady and give it a long exposure. What looks gray to you comes out green on the phone.
