Northern lights forecast tonight in the Faroe Islands

3 towns across the Faroe Islands, each with tonight's chance from NOAA's Ovation model, updated every 15 minutes. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how far the lights reach from the pole, and every town here needs Kp 1 before your eyes pick anything up.

Best tonight

Klaksvík

No town in the Faroe Islands has a measurable chance right now. That changes when a storm arrives, so check again after dark.

Klaksvík sits closest to the pole in the Faroe Islands, so it needs the least: Kp 1.

Faint aurora looks gray to your eyes and green to a phone. In the Faroe Islands a phone picks it up from about Kp 1, and your eyes need Kp 1.

Aurora is possible in the Faroe Islands from late August to mid-April. The sky has to be dark and clear. Clouds stop everything, and no camera gets around that.

Tórshavn

Sornfelli

12 km north-west · car

The highest road-served point near the capital at about 749 m, reached off Oyggjarvegur, and the one place around Tórshavn that can put you above a low cloud deck. The road is not cleared of snow, so from November to February it is often impassable.

Norðradalur

9 km west · car

A valley of about fifteen people on the west coast, down a switchback road off Oyggjarvegur, with open sea and the island of Koltur filling the western horizon. Almost no local lighting, and the capital's glow stays behind the ridge to the east.

Velbastaður

5 km south-west · car

A cliffside village fifteen minutes from town, with Hestsfjørður and the low silhouettes of Hestur and Koltur to the west. The national tourism board names it for dark skies, though 269 people live here, so walk clear of the houses.

Questions about the northern lights in the Faroe Islands

Where in the Faroe Islands is the best place tonight?

What Kp do you need to see the northern lights in the Faroe Islands?

Kp 1, the same for every town here. Kp is a 0 to 9 scale of how far the lights reach from the pole.

When is the best time of year in the Faroe Islands?

Aurora is possible from late August to mid-April, because the nights are long enough to be properly dark. A clear sky matters more than the forecast number.

Yes, from about Kp 1. A phone picks up aurora that is too faint for your eyes. Rest it on something steady and give it a long exposure. What looks gray to you comes out green on the phone.
